Seeking Justice, Compensation for Pradaxa Victims
Since Pradaxa, a prescription anticoagulant, was released in 2010, concern over its use and adverse health effects has continued to grow. In fact, Pradaxa has become the subject of several lawsuits, and litigation surrounding the drug is increasing.
In light of Pradaxa’s high incidence of adverse health reactions, including serious gastrointestinal side effects, heart attacks, uncontrollable or even fatal bleeding, and even cerebral hemorrhaging, there has been a review of how Pradaxa was marketed by its German manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim.
The large number of deaths and serious adverse reactions to Pradaxa, along with questions over how Pradaxa was tested in clinical studies, has caused governmental agencies in the U.S., Europe, and Japan to re-evaluate their prior approvals. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a safety review of Pradaxa, questioning how Boehringer Ingelheim designed and reported studies that were used to gain FDA approval for Pradaxa.
The Problem That Ignited Pradaxa Lawsuits
Pradaxa, a new anticoagulant, is designed to stop a series of chemical reactions that lead to blood clotting. Unfortunately, Pradaxa has no “antidote” or reversal agent — as do other anticoagulants — that would shut off this reaction. As a result, patients are left without any way to reverse Pradaxa’s effects in health emergencies. In addition, patients have been having serious and even fatal adverse reactions in numbers far higher than Pradaxa’s manufacturer reported would be expected.
It now appears that Pradaxa’s manufacturer was overstating benefits and underreporting risks associated with its use. Pradaxa was the most widely reported drug for adverse side effects in 2011. The same year, of all drugs being monitored, Pradaxa led reports for deaths, bleeds, kidney failure, and stroke. Additionally, Pradaxa has been linked to other side effects, such as heart attack, cerebral hemorrhaging, and various gastrointestinal issues.
